Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized in Washington, DC, after testing positive for the pandemic coronavirus and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

The former New York City mayor and personal lawyer for President Trump appeared to confirm he had tested positive for the virus in a tweet late Sunday evening, thanking people for prayers and kind wishes. “I’m getting great care and feeling good. Recovering quickly and keeping up with everything,” he wrote. Trump first broke the news of Giuliani’s infection in a tweet earlier that day.

According to multiple outlets, the 76-year-old has been experiencing symptoms of the disease and is now hospitalized at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington. So far, there is no further information about his condition, and the course of his disease is unclear. Giuliani is considered to be at high risk of the deadly illness due to his age alone.

Though it’s unclear how or when Giuliani became infected, the high-profile lawyer appears to have had multiple potential exposures recently. In the past week alone, he had traveled to several states in an effort to promote baseless claims of election fraud in the presidential election last month, which Trump lost by a significant margin. Giuliani frequently appeared maskless indoors in close proximity to many other maskless people.

Last Monday, Giuliani traveled to Phoenix and had prolonged, maskless close contact with numerous Arizona republicans and lawmakers. After Trump announced Giuliani’s infection Sunday, the Arizona legislature announced it would close for a week due to “recent cases and concerns relating to COVID-19.”

On Wednesday, Giuliani had traveled to Lansing, Michigan, for a long, unusual hearing, in which he again appeared maskless among other maskless attendees, including lawyer Jenna Ellis, who sat next to him. On Thursday, Giuliani appeared in Georgia for another hearing in which he and others again were maskless.

The Trump campaign released a statement to the Associated Press saying that Giuliani had tested negative twice before some of his travel. The statement also noted that unidentified Trump team members are now in quarantine after having recent close contact with Giuliani.

Giuliani is just the latest in Trump’s sphere to become infected with the pandemic coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. Trump and his administration have been notoriously cavalier about the pandemic and public health measures to prevent the spread of disease, which has now killed more than 280,000 people in the country. Trump himself admitted to downplaying its severity and continued to do so even after being hospitalized with COVID-19 and receiving several experimental treatments.

There have been at least three COVID-19 outbreaks at the White House since September. Giuliani is among at least 40 others in Trump’s inner circle to become infected, according to a running tally by The New York Times.
